Children's Museum of Winston-Salem is a two-story, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Children's Museum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Its mission is to create a compelling destination to play and learn by experiencing literature, storytelling and the arts. The Museum enjoys more than 98,000 visits annually, through individual and family visits, programs, events and school field trips. The Children's Museum opened in 2004, and since that time, has welcomed more than 750,000 visitors.

History

The Children's Museum of Winston-Salem was created by the Junior League of Winston-Salem as a gift to the city to celebrate the league's 75th anniversary. The museum was designed on a literature-based theme, to follow up on the literacy programs that the league had set up in Forsyth County. Furthermore, the league pledged that 10% of its active members would volunteer at the museum until at least 2020.[2]

Permanent exhibits

The museum features many permanent and rotating exhibits. The permanent exhibits include: "Kaleidescope", a crocheted climbing structure;[3] "Lucky Climber" and "Beanstalk Climber", climbing structures that lead from the lobby to the second floor; "The Enchanted Forest", a literature-based play area; "Animal Alphabet", a play area with large-scale letter sculptures; "Amazing Airways", a series of air tubes that are designed to allow children to test hypotheses about air flow; "Art Studio", provides materials and suggested art activities.[4] The Museum enjoys more than 98,000 visits annually, through individual and family visits, programs, events and school field trips. The Children's Museum opened in 2004, and since that time, has welcomed more than 750,000 visitors.
