Charmian Penelope Gooch (born 1965) is an anti-corruption campaigner who in 2014 was named on Bloomberg Markets' 50 Most Influential list.[1] With Simon Taylor and Patrick Alley, she founded Global Witness in 1993 to investigate the link between natural resources, conflict, and corruption.[2] She has jointly led Global Witness's campaign exposing the illegal trade in timber and developed and launched their campaign to combat blood diamonds; Global Witness was nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize as a result of this work.[3]

Gooch is a member of the World Economic Forum Young Global Leader Alumni Group.[4]

Awards

The founders of Global Witness received the Gleitsman International Activist Award, 2005.[5]

Charmian Gooch won the 2014 Ted Prize, consisting of $1 million, and "one wish to change the world".[6]

A $1.25 million Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship was awarded to Global Witness in 2014.[7][8]

Gooch was named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2014[9] by Fast Company (magazine).
