Captain the Honourable John William Hely-Hutchinson (1 September 1829 – 16 Jul 1855) was an officer in Her Majesty's Thirteenth Regiment of Light Dragoons.[1] He was killed in action during the Crimean War.

Life

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor along with his half-brother Viscount Suirdale, later 4th Earl of Donoughmore. It is presumed he then began training at Sandhurst Military Academy in 1845, earning his commission. He fought in the Crimean War as a Captain in HM Thirteenth Regiment of Light Dragoons, surviving the Charge of the Light Brigade.[1] He was killed in action during the Siege of Sevastopol.[2]

He was the eldest son of John 3rd Earl of Donoughmore PC KP and Barbara Reynell, daughter of Lt. Col. William Reynell, the Earl's second wife. He was born and grew up at the family seat, Knocklofty in Co. Tipperary.

Marriage

In approximately 1851, he married an English commoner Eliza Stratton of Southampton, against the objections of his father[3] causing a rift in the family which would not be reconciled. His wife Eliza renamed herself Healy (prev. Hely) to reflect their separatism from his father after his death. Eliza Healy-Hutchinson never remarried. They had one son:
