Callan (Irish: Callainn) is a barony in County Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland.

Etymology

The name Callan is from the town of Callan (Irish Callainn, "callows", a term which refers to long coarse grass thrown up in summer on marshy land which has been waterlogged all winter).[1]

Location

Callan is located in westernmost County Kilkenny. The Kings River flows through it, and was sometimes called the Callan River.

History

The Ó Glóiairn (O'Gloran) were chiefs of Callainn.[2]
