Bokaro Steel City a city located in East India in the state of Jharkhand. It is the administrative headquarters of Bokaro district. It is one of the most populous cities in the state of Jharkhand. The city has always been multicultural and cosmopolitan with residents from every state of India and as well as abroad.
The city stands at an elevation of 210 metres (690 feet) above sea level and has an area of 2,883 square kilometres (1,113 square miles). Bounded on the east by Dhanbad and Purulia, on the west by Ramgarh and Hazaribagh , on the north by Giridih and on the south by Ranchi. It is accessible through National Highway NH 23.
History
Earlier the region was known as Manbhum. The area became prominent with the establishment of Steel Plant with the collaboration of Soviet Union. Later, the city was planned and developed with sectors 1 to 12 . Each sector is further divided into Sub-Sectors A, B, C, D, E, F and G. Interestingly, sector 7 and 10 do not exists. Each Sector has shopping centres as well as play grounds and recreational areas. The entire city is planned meticulously with avenues, residential areas as well as commercial areas. The streets are lined with trees and pedestrian paths. Such meticulous plan for the city can rarely be matched by any city in Jharkhand and very few cities in India.[1]
Presently, the city or Urban Agglomeration consist of Bokaro Steel City, Chas and Chira Chas , Balidih . City Centre is the primary shopping district of the City with Market Complex at each Sectors and locality.
Demographics
As of the 2011 India census, Bokaro Steel City Urban agglomeration was the 86th largest urban agglomeration and fourth largest city in Jharkhand.[2] The demographic of the city is cosmopolitan with people from various regions of India living the City as well as many Russian's as well as Chinese residents are present in the City.
As per 2011 Census of India, Bokaro Steel City Urban Agglomeration had a population of 564,319.[3] Bokaro Steel City Urban agglomeration is composed of Bokaro Steel City, Chas Municipal corporation and Bandhgora.[4]
Education
The city has amongst the best schools in Eastern India which have attracted students from neighbouring states to study in the City. St. Xavier's School at Sector 1 was the first school in Bokaro Steel City. Other notable school being DPS Bokaro, Holy Cross School, Chinmay Vidalaya, Ayyappa School, The Pentecostal Assembly School amongst others. The city has also evolved as a centre for Engineering and Medical Entrance coaching with institutes such as FIIT-JEE, Akash Institute etc. having an established presence in the city.
The city had lacked in higher education as a result most students either study outside the state at renowned universities in India and abroad. Presently, there are few college's in the city such as Women's College, City College, Imam-ul-Haque Law College, and Guru Gobind Engineering and Management College.
Economy
The city has presence of Steel Authority of India Ltd., Oil and Natural Gas Corporation , Electrosteel Castings amongst others.
- Steel Authority India Limited- The economy of the City is primarily depended on the integrated steel plant established by Steel Authority of India . The Bokaro Steel Plant was established with the collaboration of Soviet Union when the First Prime Minister of India Jawahar lal Nehru desired to establish a Steel Plant in the region.Bokaro Steel Plant expansion [5] to extend its capacity from 7.5 Metric Tonnes before 2011.
- Electrosteel Castings Limited- A Kolkata-based water pipe manufacturer acquired 2,500 acres (10 square kilometres) of land 18 kilometres (11 miles) from the city and has erected its 2.2 MTPA steel plant. The company has invested close to Rs 80 Bn (USD 1.6 Bn) on this project which was operational from 2010.[6][7]
Bokaro Steel City - ONGC Bokaro operates the Bokaro Coal Bed Methane (CBM) block BK-CBM-2001/1 with 80 per cent stake while the remaining 20 per cent is with Indian Oil Corp (IOC). It plans to invest ₨ 823 Crores from 2017-18 to achieve a peak production of 0.9 million standard cubic meters per day.[8]
- Dalmia Cement Bharat Limited (DCBL) operates a 1.5 Million Tonne cement plant at Bokaro utilising slag supply from Bokaro Steel Plant.[9]
- SAIL-POSCO JV Steel Plant: Steel minister Sri Virbhadra Singh has announced another new steel plant for Bokaro as part of a joint venture with Posco and SAIL by using FINEX technologies for high quality steel. The capacity of the plant will be 1.5 mt, establish in BSP periphery of 500 acres (2.0 km2).[10][11][12]
- Bokaro Power Supply Company Ltd is a joint venture between DVC and SAIL in 50:50 ratio incorporated on 18.9.2001. It produces 180 MW of monthly power generation with the primary consumer being the Bokaro Steel Plant.[13]
- ArcelorMittal[14][15] is looking to set up a 12 million tonne greenfield plant in Bokaro. The company is now looking for 8,000 acres (32 km2) of land but primarily take 2,500-acre (10 km2) of land at Petarwar/Kasmar (in Bokaro district) just 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the city, nearby on NH-23. The company has been allocated 32–35 million cubic meter of water to be drawn from the Tenughat dam. In another move ArcelorMittal are to use the spare land of SAIL by establishing a new steel plant of 3–4 ml/ton capacity of 50:50 JV with PSU in BSL premises itself by the investment of $2.7 billion. The project is current stalled for over 11 years after signing of MOU.[16]
- Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd,[17][18][19] which signed an MoU on 5 February 2003, has identified 1,300 acres (5.3 km2) for its project. Monnet Ispat will invest over Rs 140 billion for the project and is building a 280-mW power plant. This project is also stalled for over 13 years now and most likely be scrapped.[20][21]
Transport
- Air
Bokaro Airport is used only by chartered aircraft of SAIL and visiting dignitaries. Steel Authority of India Limited has expressed its readiness to allow the use of its airport for the purpose. According to Union Secretary this airport will be Revamped for starters[22]
Railway
Bokaro Steel City Railway Station lies at the edge of Jharia Coalfield and serves Bokaro Steel City, and the surrounding mining-industrial area. It has Several amenities such AC/NON AC retiring rooms & waiting halls,Cloak Rooms,Water Cooler,Food Courts,Charging point,etc.[23]
Roadways
Bokaro Steel City is well connected through roadways and it has one government bus stand which is located at Naya More,near Co-operative colony which newly constructed by SAIL at Sector-12A where several buses travel via Bokaro connecting to major cities through National Highway-18. Bokaro Steel City has local transportation facilities such as autos,taxis,cabs and newly introduced electric rickshaw facilities which are available 24/7 hrs at very affordable price.[24]
Sports and culture
With a Cosmopolitan Culture, the residents of the city celebrate festivals which celebrate the cultural diversity of the county. The city celebrates Diwali, Durga Puja, Dusherra,Jagganath Rath Yatra, Christmas.
- Mohan Kumar Mangalam Stadium is in the heart of the city, in sector 4.[25]
- Senapati Cricket Stadium was constructed in 1995 and is currently maintained by Steel Authority of India Limited.[26]
