Bernardo J. Herzer

Bernardo J. Herzer is a maritime captain, inventor, and business executive. He is best known for founding Lehr (stylized: LEHR) and serving as its CEO.

Maritime career

Herzer began his maritime career at the age of fourteen, and at the age of seventeen he was a part of a world sailing tour with his family.[1] He first skippered a yacht at the age of seventeen.[2] He would spend his time abroad with his family until his early twenties. He later owned oceanographic research vessels, which he captained on missions for the UK Department of Fish and Wildlife, specifically in the North Sea. His work led him to become an advocate for global warming controls and limits against overfishing.[1] Over his career, he has logged 40,000 nautical miles, having traveled to all inhabited continents by sea. Following his career as a research ship captain, he returned to Los Angeles.[3]

LEHR

Herzer is the founder and CEO of the Los Angeles-based company Lehr, a self-funded venture. Herzer started the company in 2004 after he developed concerns about gasoline spillage during his research trips in the North Sea.[4][5] The company is a producer of propane powered lawn and garden equipment; Herzer had been converting gas-powered engines for land and maritime vehicles to propane since teenage years, claiming environmental reasons were behind the impulse.[1] Herzer also introduced propane outboard motors for sale through his company, as he has stated that propane is not a water-pollutant, as opposed to gasoline.[2] He has also produced propane-fueled scooters.[6] Herzer himself personally holds more than fifty patents on the technology used by Lehr products,[7] including those in the field of small-engine technology.[8]
