Businayana Mukundadas Sreenivasaiah College of Engineering is an autonomous engineering college in Basavangudi, Bangalore, India. It is an autonomous college, affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University(VTU), Belagavi. The engineering college, started in 1946 by B. M. Sreenivasiah, was the first private sector initiative in technical education in India and is run by the BMS Educational Trust. It was affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University from 1998 to 2008, and became autonomous in 2008. BMSCE is located on the Basavangudi Area Bull Temple Road, diagonally opposite to the famous Bull Temple. Though a private engineering college, it is partially funded by the Government of Karnataka.[1]

BMSCE has the largest student population among the engineering colleges in Karnataka, drawing students from other states of India and abroad. One of the oldest engineering colleges in Karnataka, it celebrated its "Diamond Jubilee" in 2006. It is also known for the annual inter-collegiate Techno-Cultural festival UTSAV, one of the prominent student-managed festivals in the country. BMSCE has also been the university champions under VTU for the most number of times by any college under the University. It is ranked among the top 10 engineering colleges in Karnataka. Many of the departments in the college like Telecommunication Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering etc. have been accredited by National Board of Accreditation(NBA) as TIER-1. In 2011 in university examination it topped with 32 Ranks [2]

History

BMS College of Engineering (BMSCE) was founded in the year 1946 by Sri. Bhusanayana Mukundadas Sreenivasaiah, a visionary and philanthropist and nurtured by his son Sri. B. S. Narayan. BMSCE is the first private sector initiative in engineering education in India. Started with only 3 undergraduate courses (Mechanical, Civil & Electrical), BMSCE today offers 13 Undergraduate & 16 Postgraduate courses both in conventional and emerging areas. 15 of its Departments are recognized as Research Centers offering PhD/M.Sc (Engineering by Research) degrees in Science, Engineering, Architecture and Management.

Campus

The campus has eight main buildings which include the Library, the Classroom Block, the Mechanical & Architecture Block, Computer Science/Information Science/Telecommunication/Electronics departments block, the Administrative Block and the Sports Complex, the Science Block and the Post-Graduate Block.

Apart from this, the campus also has four on-campus hostels- two girls and two boys. The campus has one of the largest international student populations in Bangalore and in the state of Karnataka itself. The countries represented are from UAE, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Tanzania, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the United States. The campus also has a single coed International Hostel to accommodate the international students.

The campus also houses a large football ground at its center, a clay tennis court and an outdoor basketball court as well. The Sports complex houses an indoor Basketball court, which can double as badminton courts, a Gym and table tennis as well.

These departments offer four year undergraduate courses in engineering. All of the undergraduate courses have been conferred autonomous status by the Visvesvaraya Technological University.

Student activities

An annual Techno Cultural fest called "UTSAV" is usually held in the month of April. This event is organized completely by a nominated student committee with some members of the staff acting as overseers. This fest showcases many events from rock concerts to fashion shows and is attended by a large student population drawn from colleges from all over India.
