Ayroor (also spelt Ayiroor (Malayalam:അയിരൂര്‍ )) is a village situated in the western part of Ranni Taluk of Pathanamthitta District in Kerala state, India. Ayroor was previously part of Tiruvalla Taluk in Alleppey District, and is considered part of Edanadu in Kerala.

Geography & History

The Pamba River flows by the southern side of this scenic village and makes soil around the village very fertile. Ayroor village used to be a part of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom. It is believed that the Thekencore kingdom's Kovilans ruled Ayroor in the past. The Kovilans brought a Christian family from the north as they believed that the kingdom will become prosperous with the presence of Christians. The descendants of this family are still present in Ayroor and are known as the Ayyakkavil family.

Tourism

The Pamba river and the surrounding hills make Ayroor a very picturesque location in central Travancore. Residents of Ayroor cultivate Coconut, Rubber, Cocoa, Tapioca, Plantain, Cinnamon, Pepper, Nutmeg, Vanilla, Rambutan and other crops, making the per capita income of the residents higher than the state average.

Festivals

One of the highlights of Ayroor is the Cherukolpuzha Hindu Parishad which is held on the dry bed of the Pamba river, held for a week in February every year. Snakeboat races also attract people to the village.

Transportation

The nearest airports are the Cochin International Airport (127 km) and Trivandrum airport (120 km). The proposed Aranmula International Airport would be the closest airport from Ayroor. It will be 8km from Ayroor when completed.

Religion

Ayroor has numerous churches and temples, as various sections of Christianity and Hinduism co-exist harmoniously and are currently almost equal in numbers and social status. This harmony has allowed Ayroor to avoid any major incidents relating to religion. There are few Muslims or Mosques in Ayroor, although the small Muslim community that lives across the river Pamba will often use facilities, like schools, in Ayroor.
