Anthony Lucero

Anthony Lucero (born November 1, 1967 in Los Angeles, California) is an American poet. He is also known for his work as a screenwriter, director, actor, producer and journalist.^[1] He is the founder of the circus outreach organization, Circus Remedy,^[2] as well as the independent publishing house, Putzina Press.^[3]

Writing

Chiron Review published Lucero's "The Living Party" in 1992^[4] and he was widely published in the small press world over the next decade.^[5][6] Editor and archivist Geof Huth has called his work "Incomparable."

Lucero is the author of the acclaimed, The Clown (Chiron Review Books, DM-z Lit),^[7] dear little missy, with photographer Massimo Leardini, and The Living Party, Selected Earlier Poems (Chiron Review Books). He is widely published in the small press world,^[8][9][10] both nationally and internationally. He has written several screenplays including Trade, MOO BAAHAHH OINK, Halo of Stars, and an adaptation of Richard Brautigan's, A Confederate General from Big Sur, for Benicio Del Toro.

Journalism

In 2015, Lucero began a five part series on war for the American Literary Journal, Chiron Review. The series features Avner Gvaryahu of Breaking the Silence,^[11] Lt. Col Jason Amerine, United States Army Special Forces,^[12] Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, poet and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh,^[13] Cuban artist and human rights activist El Sexto (Danilo Maldonado Machado),^[14] and Shui-Meng Ng, the wife of disappeared Laotian activist Sombath Somphone.^[15] The series has continued and includes interviews with Wikileaks founder and editor-in-chief, Julian Assange, Nepalese women's rights activist and founder of the Sambad Center, Rachana Sunar, and Chinese contemporary artist and activist, Ai Weiwei.

Acting

A guest starring role on NBC's Unsub in 1989 was followed by notable performances in such films as HBO's The Image, Pump Up the Volume (Golden Space Needle Award at the Seattle FF, Audience Award at the Deauville FF), Silent Rain (Academy Award winning short) and Molder of Dreams. Lucero would later star in the critically acclaimed, Loved (Independent Spirit Award nominee for Best Film, Grand Prix spécial Deauville nominee), opposite William Hurt and Robin Wright.

Directing

In 2016, Lucero directed his first feature, Halo of Stars,^[16][17][18] based on his long poem, The Clown. The film is set for release in 2017 and stars Pål Sverre Hagen, Lily Collins, Holliday Grainger, Keti Mchedlishvili, Harry Treadaway, János Derzsi, Nikola Djuricko, Nutsa Kukhianidze, Stacy Martin and Jean-Marc Barr.

Lucero is currently directing a documentary on Richard Brautigan, Here is Something Beautiful (etc.^[19][20] which he began in 2011. In 2012, he directed two music videos for musician, Emily Wells: Passenger (acoustic) and the largely animated Darlin’ (acoustic).^[21] He has also been directing a longer reaching documentary, Tomás the Red Haired Angel, on the Czech clown Tomás Kubínek. In 2016 he will direct his first feature, The Clown,^[22] which he also wrote.

Circus Remedy

In 2006 Anthony co-founded the circus outreach organization, Circus Remedy^[23] (www.circusremedy.org) with friends Christine Harnos and Terry Notary. Circus Remedy has since made visits to ailing children worldwide, including children's hospitals throughout North America, The Children's Aid Society in Bronx, NY, orphanages in Tanzania and South Africa, Amma's (Mata Amritanandamayi) hospitals and orphanages in Kerala, India, Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, CT, and IDP camps in Eastern Europe. Circus Remedy sponsors partner organizations such as Afghan Mini Mobile Circus in Kabul, Afghanistan, as well as Circus Harmony's ongoing collaboration with the Jewish and Arab Galilee Youth Circus in Israel. Circus Remedy has produced two short films, Bipsy Twirlarina and the Make Believe Kid and The Fable of Profitt the Fox, both for children's hospitals. In 2009, Circus Remedy introduced 'The Little Hands Project' to California schools, bridging healthy children to children with illness.

Putzina Press

In 2015, Lucero co-created Putzina Press with graphic artist Craig Ashby.
