Yang Ying (born 28 February 1989), better known by her stage name Angelababy, is a Chinese-born Hong Kong model, actress, and singer.^[1] Her stage name came from the combination of her English name "Angela" and her nickname "Baby".^[2] She is one of the New Four Dan Actresses in mainland China.

Early life

Yang was born on 28 February 1989 in Shanghai, to a father from Hong Kong, who is of half Chinese and half German descent, and a Shanghainese mother from Shanghai. Her birth name is Yang Ying (Cantonese: Yeung Wing). Her father runs a fashion business in Shanghai.^[3] She gained an interest in fashion as a child under her father's influence. She said in an interview, "Even though he [her father] sells more mature clothes, I loved going to his store and trying on new outfits, and mixing and matching them. It was fun. I think that's how I developed a passion for fashion."^[3] She is fluent in Mandarin, Shanghainese, Cantonese, and has a basic command of English.

Yang moved to Hong Kong when she was thirteen,^[3] and graduated from Notre Dame College. Although her English name is Angela, she was sometimes called "Baby" during her primary and secondary school years. When she started modeling, she combined these two names to Angelababy.^[3]

Career

Beginnings as a model and transition to films

Angela Yeung (better known as Angelababy) entered the entertainment industry when she was 14 years old, signing on as a model at Style International Management. In 2007, she became a back-up dancer for Jay Chou during his 2007-8 World Tour. In 2009, she attended the Fashion's Night Out” held at Tokyo. She also participated in Japan's TCG Fashion Show. Subsequently in 2010, she walked the "Tokyo Girls Collection 2010" and the "Tanjokyo Girls Collection” fashion shows.

Angelababy debuted as an actress in the movie Trival Matters in 2007, where she had a 5 minute cameo in the film. She then starred in numerous films as supporting roles, as well as appearing in music videos. In 2011, Angelababy had her first leading role in the film Love You You alongside Eddie Peng. She sung a duet with JJ Lin titled "Bottom of the Heart" as part of the movie's soundtrack.

In June 2012, Angelababy signed on with Huayi Brothers and set up her own personal studio. She began to shift her career into mainland China. In September, she starred in the kungfu movie Tai Chi O and its sequel Tai Chi Hero in October. The same year, she starred in First Time, a remake of the 2003 Korean movie ...ing. She plays the role of an adventurous university student, which garnered her the Most Anticipated Actress award at the 13th Chinese Film Media Awards.

Rising popularity

2013–2014

In January 2013, Angelababy was chosen as the one of the four Fadan actresses along with Liu Shishi, Yang Mi and Ni Ni. In April, she was cast in her first television drama, Love Yunge from the Desert as the main character Yunge, adapted from Tong Hua's novel Song in the Clouds. In August, she played a policewoman in Crimes of Passion. She was nominated as Best Actress at the China International Film Festival for her performance. In September, she played a supporting role as a beautiful courtesan in Tsui Hark's crime action film Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon. The film was a box office hit and Angelababy won the Most Popular Actress award at the 21st Beijing College Student Film Festival.

In 2014, Angelababy was cast in the American film Hitman: Agent 47, marking her Hollywood debut. In October, she joined the cast of Hurry Up, Brother, a spin-off from the original South Korean variety program Running Man. The series was a huge hit in China, achieving a viewership rating of 4.2, and made Angelababy a household name. In November, she was cast in the crime suspense film Kill Time alongside Taiwanese actor Ethan Juan. In December, she collaborated with fellow Hurry Up, Brother cast member Michael Chen in the romance film Love on the Cloud.

2015–2016

Angelababy was crowned "Weibo Goddess", as well as "Weibo Queen" for the year 2014. She also placed 12th on Forbes China Celebrity 100, her highest ranking yet. In January 2015, she was cast in the Hong Kong fantasy film League of Gods, which also stars Jet Li and Fan Bingbing. In July, she was cast in The Ferryman alongside Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Takeshi Kaneshiro. In August, she starred alongside Ni Ni in Bride Wars, a remake of the 2009 american film.

In September, Love Yunge from the Desert premiered on Hunan TV. The series was a commercial hit, and went on to surpass 8 billion views online. On December 5, Angelababy was awarded the Leaping Improvement award at the iQiyi All Star Carnival. On December 19, Mojin: The Lost Legend, based on the fantasy novel Ghost Blows Out the Light, was released. Angelababy plays the love interest of Hu Bayi, the main character of the movie played by Chen Kun. The film was a huge commercial hit, topping box office charts upon its release.^[4] For the role, Angelababy won Best Supporting Actress at the 33rd Hundred Flowers Awards.

Angelababy was listed as one of Forbes' inaugural 30 under 30 Asian Celebrities under the film, music, television and sport category for the year 2016. In June 2016, she participated in the Hollywood science fiction film Independence Day: Resurgence. She also signed with an American management agency in the same year.

In July 2016, she co-starred alongside Jing Boran in the youth romance film Love O2O, based on Gu Man's novel Just One Smile is Very Alluring. She was also cast as the female lead in upcoming historical drama General and I alongside Wallace Chung.

Personal life

Angelababy dated Hong Kong singer and actor William Chan from 2004 to 2009.

Angelababy had been dating Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming, who is 11 years her senior, for six years, but their relationship was not revealed to the public until February 2014. On 27 May 2015, they obtained their marriage certificate in Qingdao, China^[5] and their wedding banquet took place in Shanghai on 8 October 2015.^[6] The wedding banquet was reported to be one of the most lavish in China's history with a reported estimate of US$31 million.^[7] In the same month, Angelababy sued a Ruili clinic for US$80,000 for referring to her as a recipient of plastic surgery. An examination she underwent at a Beijing hospital concluded that her face showed no signs of prior surgical work.^[8]

In October 2016, Huang and Angelababy announced her pregnancy.
