American Baptist Historical Society

The American Baptist Historical Society is the oldest Baptist historical society in the United States.[1]

History

It was created in 1853 after the instigation of John Mason Peck.[1] In 1862, it was chartered under the laws of Pennsylvania.[1] In 1896, a fire destroyed the archives.[1] That same year, Samuel Colgate gave his personal collection to Colgate University.[1] In 1948, it was moved to Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School.[1] In 1984, the official records were moved to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.[1] In 2008, it was moved to the campus of Mercer University, in Atlanta, Georgia.
