The Albemarle County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) provides law enforcement services for 98,970 people within 726 square miles (1,880 km²) of jurisdiction within Albemarle County, VA.

History

The ACSO was created in 1745 when Joseph Thompson was appointed as the first sheriff. At first sheriffs were appointed for a 2-year term. Then in 1895, citizens started electing sheriffs for 4-year terms. Lucian Watts was the first elected sheriff.^[1]

Organization

The agency is currently headed by Sheriff J. E. "Chip" Harding. The ACSO currently has 20 full-time deputies and 40 sworn volunteers.^[2]
