Aireon is a private company headquartered in Mclean, Virginia that was formed in 2011[1] as a joint venture between Iridium Communications and Nav Canada, along with other Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) such as the Irish Aviation Authority[2] (IAA), Naviair,[3] and ENAV,[4] to provide space-based automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast (ADS-B).[5] As part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s NextGEN program, “ADS-B is the FAA’s satellite-based successor to radar that makes use of GPS technology to determine and share precise aircraft location information, as well as streaming additional flight information to the cockpits of aircraft equipped with the technology.”[6]

Iridium NEXT, a second-generation worldwide network of telecommunications satellites, plans to launch 81 new satellites in a low-orbit constellation that will support the NextGen system.[5] Nav Canada will be Aireon’s first customer to incorporate the service into their North Atlantic airspace operations.[7] GlobalBeacon is a jointly operated service between Aireon and FlightAware to allow commercial tracking of airline flights and provides compliance with the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) requirement.[8][9]
