Adlam (name)

Adlam is an English noble surname derived from the Anglo Saxon Adel helm, meaning "eagle shield" or "noble protector". The name was first introduced into England by the Normans after the Conquest of 1066, and is recorded as "Adelelmus" (without surname) in the 1086 Domesday Book for Kent. The Adlam family were significant landowners in Somerset and Wiltshire, particularly in Chew Magna and Meare, and as owners of the manor of Chew Magna and Manor Farmhouse, Meare.
