30% Club

The 30% Club campaigns for greater representation of women on the boards of FTSE100 boards with a target of a minimum of 30%. It was established in the United Kingdom in 2010[1] by Helena Morrissey, chief executive of Newton Investment Management.[2][3] The club has chapters in Australia, Canada, GCC, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Southern Africa, United Kingdom and the United States.[4] As of December 2016, thanks to the efforts by Helena Morrissey and the 30% Club, 27% of Britain's FTSE100 board is female. The club is currently led by Brenda Trenowden. The club has expanded its influence throughout the world and is currently working "on bettering the gender balance at each stage of the journey from schoolroom to boardroom."[1]

The Vision

The vision of the 30% club is to have gender balance on boards which can encourage better leadership and governance. The club does not believe in mandatory quotas as a way to get women on boards. Instead, the 30% Club believe "in using behind-the-scenes persuasion to help make boards more representative".[5] They also believe that the diversity in the boards will contribute to better performance for companies and their shareholders.[6]

The Mission

The mission is to have gender diverse boards for businesses through the efforts of CEOs and chairs of businesses. They also strive for gender balance on all levels of the business organizations. They believe business leadership is the key to their mission.[6]

The Values

Their approach is to have a collaborative and concentrated approach. They believe this will help the progress towards gender balance on all of the levels of the organization. They believe that sustainable and purposeful change is more valued than a quota approach. The clubs efforts strive to help networks and companies through collaborations and the commitment of the business leaders.[6]

Formula for Success

The 30% Club has developed a formula for success. The first step is to have a goal with a time table and measurable outcome. They also note that the status quo is unacceptable according to a political census. The third factor to success is that change can happen if those in power pursue the effort. The fourth step is to have businesses with a willingness to collaborate. The fifth and final piece of the formula to success is a consistent plan of actions and programs.[7]
