It was the 58th edition of the Rome Masters and was part of the Tennis Masters Series of the 2001 ATP Tour and of Tier I of the 2001 WTA Tour. Both the men's and women's events took place at the Foro Italico in Rome in Italy. The men's tournament was played from May 7 through May 13, 2001 while the women's tournament was played from May 14 through May 20, 2001.
