Harborough /ˈhɑːrbrə/ or /ˈhɑːrbᵿrə/is a constituency^{[n 1]} covering the south of Leicestershire^{[n 2]} represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament^{[n 3]} since 1992 by Conservative Party member and barrister Sir Edward Garnier QC.

Current representative

Sir Edward Garnier QC was Shadow Attorney General England and Wales, scrutinizing decisions of the head of the UK government's highest legal office^{[n 4]} and "earned wide acclaim for a thoughtful performance in that role, in which he demonstrated his legal expertise without becomingly excessively partisan"^[2] from 1997 until 2001. From 2007 until 8 September 2009 he was Shadow Minister for Prisons after which he once again became Shadow Attorney General. He served for two years from 2010 until a reshuffle on 4 September 2012 as Solicitor General which is a slightly lower position than Attorney-General, delegated specific advice responsibilities, without litigation responsibilities.

Boundaries

The constituency takes its name from Market Harborough, seat of the Harborough local government district. The constituency excludes parts of the Harborough district (including some eastern suburbs of Leicester which are in the Rutland & Melton constituency, but includes the smaller borough of Oadby and Wigston that adjoins Leicester.

History

The seat was created in the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 and in boundary changes in 1974 reflecting the growth in population and electorate of Leicestershire lost a large amount of its territory to the new seat of Blaby.

Latest boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Leicestershire, the Boundary Commission for England has made only minor changes to the existing constituency arrangement. The modified constituency will be formed by the following electoral wards;

The entire borough of Oadby and Wigston
Bosworth, Fleckney, Glen, Kibworth, Lubenham, Market Harborough-Great Bowden and Arden, Market Harborough-Little Bowden, Market Harborough-Logan and Market Harborough-Welland in the Harborough district
